ANTIOCH (KCBS Radio) -- Hours after BART directors voted 5-4 to not pursue an extension of the system to Livermore, the transit agency is launching service to Antioch on Friday.

The new eBART extension uses diesel multiple unit (DMU) light-rail trains as opposed to the standard BART equipment. Passengers traveling east of the Pittsburg/Bay Point station will have to transfer onto the new line.

BART says the new service  is 10 miles long, adds two new stations, and provides relief for congestion along Highway 4.

The system is capable of carrying 2400 passengers per hour.  Friday will see free rides being offered after a midday dedication ceremony. Regular revenue service begins on Saturday.
