A huge fire quickly engulfed a construction site and prompted evacuations in Santa Clara on Friday morning.

The building on El Camino Real that was ablaze was going to be a 56-unit apartment complex, but was destroyed before construction was complete.

The Santa Clara Fire Department said that fire was under control around 12:15 p.m. although some debris was smoldering.

Witnesses described seeing an inferno before firefighters arrived.

"The sky was black. Flames were shooting out all over the place," said one witness. "It was pretty devastating."

Residents who lived neighboring buildings had been evacuated by the Santa Clara Fire Department, Capt. Wahid Kazem told KCBS Radio.
