A tow truck hauling another vehicle caused significant damage to the San Mateo Bridge when it collided into the center divider on Tuesday morning, the California Highway Patrol announced.

Two lanes in the eastbound direction will be shut for "an extended period of time" while repair crews remove concrete debris and assess the median's condition, according to information from the CHP.

A tow truck large enough to remove the one that crashed was not expected to reach the scene until approximately noon, the highway patrol said

Drivers should consider using the Dumbarton or Bay bridges to avoid congestion.

There was no immediate information on the condition of the driver of the tow truck.

The crash was first reported around 10:20 a.m.
