San Francisco's park system is one of the best in the country, according to the Trust for Public Land, which ranked it seventh among the largest cities.

One thing that gave the city's parks a high spot on the ParkScore index was that all residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park.

The nonprofit organization also commended San Francisco for setting aside 20 percent of its land for parks.

One problem with the city's open spaces was that the median park size of 1.3 acres was considered comparatively small.

Among other Bay Area cities, Fremont was 31 on the list, San Jose trailed closely at 33 and Oakland came in at 40.

The non-profit organization evaluated park systems in the 100 largest U.S. cities based on four criteria: access to residents, acreage, investment, and amenities.

Washington, D.C. was first on the list.
