SAN RAFAEL (KCBS Radio) -- Sixteen-year-old Matteo Almaguer has spent his vacation in summer school, but he's not a student. Instead, he's the teacher.

Matteo, of San Rafael, is an expert in making and building drones. He got his first drone in the fifth grade, and since then he's taught himself how to construct his own.

This summer, he's been sharing his knowledge in a series of three- and five-day courses at his San Rafael school that teach other students how to build and fly drones.

"For the past five years, I've had a passion for drones," said Matteo. "I've wanted to expand the hobby."

His hommeade 12-inch wide device reaches speeds of 100 mph and is equipped with a camera that transmits images to a set of virtual reality goggles so Matteo can see what's in its path.

Correction: An earlier version of this article misspelled Matteo's last name. It is Almaguer. We regret the error.
