SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) - Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) urged President Trump to abandon an immigration policy that has separated thousands of children from their parents in recent weeks.

“This is just terrible. I never thought I’d live in a country where this would happen and that that country would be the United States of America,” Feinstein said on KCBS Radio on Monday. “It’s everything that we don’t stand for, and it’s just appalling.”

Along with 21 other Democratic and independent senators, Feinstein introduced a bill earlier this month that would prohibit the Department of Homeland Security from breaking up families accused of illegally crossing the border.

The bill co-authored by Feinstein must attract support from Republican senators to become law. But, the Trump administration could simply abandon the controversial policy, Feinstein said.

“Mr. President, just say ‘Stop it.’ That’s all you have to do,” she said. “He has the authority to stop it. This is an initiative of his administration and no others.”

In May, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a “zero tolerance” crackdown in an attempt to deter immigrants. More than 2,000 children have been placed in facilities while their parents face criminal charges for entering the U.S. The policy extends to asylum seekers fleeing violence in Central America.

Trump has repeatedly claimed on Twitter and in statements to reporters on Friday that Democrats passed a law requiring the family separation.
