Authorities in Sunnyvale have identified Isaiah Joel Peoples, 34, as the driver who appeared to deliberately strike a crowd of pedestrians on Tuesday night, sending eight of them to the hospital.

Several of the victims have life-threatening injuries, according to officials.

The Associated Press reported that Peoples' mother said her son is a "model citizen" and Army veteran of the Iraq War who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Peoples was taken into custody after his black Toyota Corolla plowed into people at the intersection of El Camino Real and Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road. Witnesses said that he did not appear to slow down when he approached the pedestrians.

"There's no evidence that he tried to avoid them," said Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Captain Jim Choi.

The FBI is helping Sunnyvale's police handle the investigation.

More details are expected to be released by Sunnyvale public safety department on Wednesday afternoon.
