Officials with the San Jose Unified School District have renamed one of the city's middle schools because of its association with a former governor who implemented racist projects.
The former Burnett Academy, which was named for California's first elected governor Peter Burnett, now will be known as Ohlone Middle School.
San Jose was the state capital at the time Burnett was governor, but while in office, he began a campaign to remove Native Americans and African Americans from the new state.
Students and staff at the school had pressured the district to change the name, and officials announced earlier this year that they were accepting suggestions for a new name. The district chose the Ohlone moniker on Thursday night.

A San Francisco preschool dropped Burnett's name in 2011.
