SAN FRANCISCO — The holiday season is getting underway with the opening of the Union Square ice-skating rink on Wednesday.

"The holidays are here — that's what it means," said the rink's general manager, Robert Keith. "This brings everybody together. It's family fun."

It's the 11th year that the Safeway rink has been the centerpiece of the shopping and dining experience in Union Square.

"The whole world descends on Union Square during the holiday period to shop, to see family, to eat, to have fun," said Assemblyman David Chiu, who attended the opening, but didn't skate. "This just brings everyone together in a way that reminds us of what's important."

Olympic skater Brian Boitano and the San Francisco Giants mascot Lou Seal also took part in the festivities.

Skaters can glide around from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. every day through January 21.
