OAKLAND — Oakland's central Post Office became an outpost of the North Pole as elementary students wrote letters about their Christmas wishes to Santa Claus on Tuesday.

The first graders from Prescott Elementary School even got a special visit from St. Nick and Mrs. Claus during their festive writing assignment.

"For Christmas, may I have...a bike and a pogo stick," wrote one boy. Many children asked for smartphones.

Their teacher Karen Packer said there's some valuable educational lessons packed into the seasonal activity.

"They're motivated to write, so that's going to give them more energy," said Packer. "They have to write words and sentences. They have to know if they're writing a statement or a question, and they're spelling. So, they're practicing all of these skills right now, so it's really good.
