Thanksgiving is still weeks away, but San Francisco is already gearing up for the holidays with the official opening of the popular ice skating rink at Union Square.

The event is a big draw for tourists around the holidays. This year the rink was opened by the actor playing Harry Pottery in the Curran Theater who cast a spell that broke the ice.

There will be special events this season, including the polar bear skate on New Year's Day and Drag Queens on Ice.

There's always the chance of spotting a visitor turning the rink into the location for personal special event. There have been more than 100 wedding proposal at the rink.

Robert Keith, the ice rink's general manager, recommends skaters purchase tickets online. Now in their 12th season, they often sell out, he said.
