Graduates at Oakland's Skyline High School got a surprise Friday when a surprise guest joined the school's online commencement. Oscar-winning actor, and Skyline High alum, Tom Hanks sent a message of support to the Class of 2020.

“My name is Tom Hanks, Skyline High School Class of 1974, welcoming you all to George C. Bliss field for your graduation ceremonies,” said a deadpan Hanks pointing to the office behind him.

Hanks shared some of his memories about the school and sent a message of congratulations to students for their hard work, and adaptation under difficult circumstances.

“Congratulations for having gotten through these years of struggle, which will I think lead to the triumph as you pursue your heart’s desire,” said Hanks, “you have been chosen by fate to lead the way in whatever our post-pandemic world is going to be, make it a good one won’t ya?”

The school’s online commencement, like many around the state, was forced due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic with students, families, and school faculty and teachers joining the proceedings virtually.
