There are 398 individuals and businesses in Santa Clara County who are the rightful owners of $400,000 held in the county's Unclaimed General Collection Funds.

The Department of Tax and Collections has a list of these recipients and is trying to track them down for their share of the pie.

On average, each name on the list would get $1,005.

Dora Espinoza, of the Department of Tax and Collections, said the money comes from a variety of sources like overpayments, duplicate payments, adjustments of charges and compensation for crime victims.

"In many cases, we are unable to locate the victims, or we've lost contact with the victims," Espinoza said. "That's why we have these funds available."

Some of the money has been in the county trust fund since 2010.

Espinoza said they've been trying to return it through various outreaches.

"Our goal is to get these monies to the parties that are owed these funds."

Time is running out, however, so people who are owed money need to file their claim by December 26, 2019.
