Jury trials in San Mateo County are expected to be put on hold with an emergency order from the California Supreme Court on Monday.

San Mateo County Executive Officer Neal Taniguchi told KCBS Radio that he expects the order to be issued by state Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye.

It takes an order from the chief justice to shut down courts.

It was not immediately clear how long the closure would last.

All jurors summoned this week for jury duty would be excused, Tanigachi said.

San Mateo County had already announced it would stop some misdemeanor and small claims trials.

Los Angeles County, which has been hard hit by the virus, had also sought to shut down courts for 30 days.
