With the holiday season just around the corner, Bay Area charity groups are beginning to kick into high gear to get ready.

Volunteers at Sacred Heart Community Service in San Jose are busy distributing free food donations. But even the flurry of activity is no comparison to what is to come.

Laura Alvarez Santos with Sacred Heart said, right now, the organization is looking for extra food-sorting time, and also more space for donations.

“It’s busy all throughout,” Alvarez Santos said. “The holidays are really about family and coming together in unity, and we want to make sure that everyone can do that.”

Sacred Heart recently got another freezer with enough capacity to hold more than 7,000 turkeys. But to fill it, the charity needs community support.

“This program is about families helping other familes,” Alvarez Santos said. “The reason why we can continue to be able to host this program is because the community rallies together.”

In addition to turkeys, they’re also looking for cash donations, toys and volunteer time.
