Search crews in Marin County looking for an elderly couple who've been missing for days turned their focus to the chilly waters of Tomales Bay.

Three days of extensive land searches have so far brought no signs of Ian Irwin, 72, and his wife, Carol Kiparsky, 77, who vanished Friday from their rented cabin in Inverness.

“We don’t have any other lead that they are on land,” sMarin County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brenton Schneider said Wednesday.

Schneider said the couple was last seen at 4 p.m. on Feb. 14, as they walked along an Inverness road, and may have trekked out to beaches at Tomales Bay to watch the sunset that evening. He also said that the trails that go down to the water’s edge are only about a 20-30 minute walk from their rented cottage.

Now, crews are leaning their searching efforts on shell beaches along the shoreline. Schneider said those crews include an experienced dive rescue team.

“We (also) operate a remotely-operated vessel that has a sonar attachment to it,” Schneider added. “So it’s like an underwater submarine if we were to see an object down there.”

The couple left cell phones, computers, hiking gear and a car at the Inverness inn, authorities said. They were reported missing when they failed to check out from the cabin on Saturday.
