San Francisco’s Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center went on lockdown Wednesday.

The hospital was placed under protective quarantine at 10 a.m. and the order went into effect at 5 p.m.

Residents are ordered not to leave the campus unless they qualify for certain limited exceptions. Residents who violate the order may not be allowed to re-enter the facility, officials warned.

The nursing facility serves 750 elderly and ill residents and is run by the city. Many residents are over 65 and have chronic illnesses, making them particularly vulnerable to the virus. Some residents may continue to be safely discharged if possible.

Five staff members have recently tested positive for the coronavirus and no patients have tested positive, although only 15 had been tested as of Tuesday.

Visitors and non-essential personnel have been prohibited from entering the facility since March 6.
