SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) -- BART riders returning from the holiday weekend were greeted Monday morning at the Embarcadero station by fare inspectors, who boarded trains and demanded proof of payment from every passenger.

The highly-visible enforcement effort forced early-morning trains to pause for about five minutes.

Passengers unable to show proof of payment were being escorted from trains by BART Police officers.

The fare-enforcement effort comes as BART grapples with an issue that costs the agency millions of dollars a year in uncollected fares and is at the center of rider concerns about safety aboard the system.
