Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies are asking for help in locating a 71-year old hiker who vanished while visiting a park five days ago.

Jon Clifford is an experienced hiker who was reported missing by friends after he did not return from a trip to Hood Mountain Regional Park on Saturday.

“His vehicle was located in the parking lot of the park,” said Sonoma County Sheriff Sgt. Juan Valencia.

Search and rescue crews are combing the park on off-road motorcycles and on foot. “They’re walking the area, checking down embankments, checking creeks, basically checking everything you could think of to see if they could locate him,” said Valencia.

Clifford had been to the park before and liked to hike McCormick Trail to Grandmother Tree, as well as Wildcat Trail in Sugarloaf Ridge State Park and property in between the two trails, according to authorities.

He is 6 feet tall and weighs 170 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.

Officials ask anyone who may have seen him in the park over the weekend to call 707-565-2121 so that crews can narrow down the search area.
