Crews Battle Suspected Arson Wildfire In San Jose Overnight

    A suspect is in custody in connection with a 90 acre fire in the south San Jose foothills that investigators say was deliberately set.

    “San Jose PD did arrest a suspect who was witnessed starting a fire,” says San Jose Fire Captain Brian Palodichuk.

    One witness, Shannon East, KPIX-5 that she was in the area with friends when they saw a man with a machete trying to set bushes on fire. They say they intervened and warned neighbors of the fire.

    The man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

    Palodichuk says the fire started as six separate fires along Colleen Drive near the Santa Teresa Water Treatment plant just before 6 p.m.

    As of Friday morning it was about 80% contained and full containment is expected by this afternoon.

    Several homes in the area were evacuated for a time, but everyone has since been allowed to return, and no homes have burned.
