The Alameda County Health Department has begun testing residents for the potentially deadly coronavirus detected throughout Wuhan, China, that has left dozens of people dead and hundreds of others ill.

Although there are no confirmed cases in California, there are 10 patients who are being monitored for the disease, county health officials said.

"Currently we have less than 10 patients who are what we call ‘patients under investigation,’” said Alameda County Health Officer Dr. Erica Pan. “So that means we have already started to receive calls from clinicians about people who may have fever or respiratory symptoms."

Patients with possible ties to Wuhan remain under home isolation as doctors await test results from the CDC in Atlanta.

Officials at the Port of Oakland are also taking precautions as they continue to conduct medical screenings for people taking flights from China to SFO.

The Fremont Fire Department issued an alert Thursday to dispel social media rumors that the virus had been found in the East Bay city.

There have been two confirmed cases in the United States.
