Thousands of people rallied in Oakland on Sunday afternoon to show solidarity against the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Steven Taylor, as well as other Black lives lost at the hands of police officers.

Protesters drove their cars from the Port of Oakland through downtown, honking their horns along the way.

Demonstrations like these are normally found at Frank Ogawa Plaza, but Anti-Police Terror Project organizer Cat Brooks said these are not normal times.

“Ever since the pandemic hit, everything from the housing rallies to the rally against Santa Rita jail, to the rally for Steven Taylor, this is how we’ve been doing it to try to keep people safe,” she told KCBS Radio. “We’re in the middle of a pandemic that attacks the lungs.”

The original plan was to meet at Oakland Police headquarters, but that route was blocked off by law enforcement due to the protests over the weekend. They also wanted to end the event during daylight hours, just in case.
