Reports of his death have been greatly exaggerated, but former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown is alive and well, and we’ve got the sound bites to prove it.

The BET annual awards show was held in Los Angeles Sunday night, and during the “In Memoriam” segment, there was Mayor Brown’s smiling face.

“I’m in good shape at the moment,” he told KCBS Radio.

Black Entertainment Television meant to honor former NFL Hall of Famer Willie Brown, who played for years with the Raiders and died last year in Tracy.

“My niece called and was raising hell because she said, ‘you didn’t let me know!’” said Mayor Brown.

The 86-year-old Texas native said a BET representative phoned him on Sunday night to apologize. Brown said he asked two things of the network: not to fire whoever made the mistake and for a copy of the photo.
