BART Passenger Fatally Stabbed After Stopping Theft, Police Say

Bob Butler/KCBS Radio
Police say a man was killed on BART Tuesday after trying to stop a theft on a train near the South Hayward station.
The suspect, who appeared to be homeless and was not wearing a shirt or shoes, tried to take the shoes off of a sleeping passenger at 1 p.m, according to witness statements.
A man intervened and drew a knife on the suspected thief who wrestled away the blade and fatally stabbed the passenger, police said.
The suspect fled from the train at the South Hayward and attempted to steal cars from a nearby dealership. Police arrested him nearby.
Police did not identify the suspect, but Jermaine Brim, 39, was arrested Wednesday for first-degree murder and carjacking in Hayward, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
BART officials said they are "heartbroken" that someone lost their life on one of their trains and are increasing police presence throughout the system.
