Contra Costa and Alameda counties have been awarded a state-funded grant that will be used to help prevent civilians in both areas from illegally dumping unwanted belongings.

Local lawmakers announced Wednesday they will receive $750,000 to support a one-year pilot program to combat illegal dumping.

Contra Costa County Supervisor Diane Burgis, who serves in District 3, said that the grant will allow for community outreach and education on proper disposal procedures, along with enforcement.

“We're also going to put some money towards high definition remote control cameras in hot spots,” she said. “We’re looking at enforcing that everybody has garbage service, cause that’s a requirement.”

Burgis says the counties plan to designate specific officers to help regulate situations and enforce policy.

Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan secured the funding for the program.
